Don't Make Me Think Vol. 1 - 'The Pope'

Some people don't want to think, it's too tiring, too much work.

I was chatting with some guys the other day. I remarked that this year would be the first Christmas Mass of the new Pope. Is Pope Benedict good or bad? He seems quite traditional unlike his predecessor. And I kinda miss the old guy. He had that special connection to young people and non-catholics. John Paul II was probably the most free thinking Pope the Vatican has ever had. How did he even get elected in the first place? Why would a congregation of traditional institutional Cardinals in the Vatican elect him in 1978?

Actually I was just wondering out loud. I didn't really expect an answer.

What was unexpected was the reaction of the guys around me. One of them said "rob, why do you even ask us questions like that? We can't get into the mind of the cardinals. These are hard questions."

Then silence.

Don't make me think. It's too much work.

Merry Christmas.

Roehl that's right. I miss our conversation topics. I guess each person is different.

I actually asked one of the people why they were annoyed by my questions/topics for discussion. His reply was interesting: (paraphrasing) 'rob, it's because we don't want to think, we just want to relax. And there are no easy answers to your questions, so why do you even bother to ask them?'

People react differently. Some like a little bit of uncertainty. Others want structure, they want everything to be planned and spelled out for them. For a few, a little bit of uncertainty can be troubling and cause pain. They don't want to get the 'answers' wrong (in reality there is no correct answer). What's to do about it? I guess shift to lighter, easy to digest topics. Pre-chew the ideas for them so they become easier to swallow. Boring if you ask me, hehehe.

odd response from the guys. pope john pauls election, just like any other election is political. there is an agenda and that agenda is to be met when election is over.

i would think the church at that time, needed someone with charisma to revive its dying popularity. after vatican 2, just a few years before pope john pauls debut, there is already that universal consciusness of newness, of revival.

now for pape benoit. i dont know him personally. but he has already asserted his traditional views on age old but still current issues of gender equality, sex, homosexuality, celibacy, state and church separation. etc.

what kind of person would one be, if he is a leader of an institution that protects pedophiles. one who at one time, joined the nazis ..
